Praise for Radcliffe
by thelondonpaper.com. Wednesday, 28 February 2007
Daniel Radcliffe received a standing ovation at the end of his West End stage debut in Peter Shaffer's Equus.

The 17-year-old Harry Potter actor drew a star-studded audience to the official opening night of the disturbing story.

Celebrity guests were united in their praise for Radcliffe who plays Alan Strang, a troubled stablehand who has an erotic fixation with horses.

And they gave mixed reactions to the four-minute nude scene which has dominated the headlines in the run up to the show's launch.

TV presenter Graham Norton said: "Why do people keep asking about him being naked? I'm a gay man and I'm not mentioning it. It's a play - get over it, ladies."

But Pixie Geldof, who watched last night's performance at the Gielgud Theatre, in Shaftesbury Avenue, with her father Sir Bob, said: "I was so shocked! I love him, I think he is beautiful."

Hollywood actor Christian Slater said: "The work that Daniel did on stage was incredible, extraordinary. I take my hat off to him completely.

"He became Alan Strang. I never thought for one second I was looking at Daniel Radcliffe - I was watching Alan Strang.

"I'm remarkably impressed. I think he was brave, adventurous and courageous, he's a phenomenon and I would certainly love to work with him."

After the performance, the young actor admitted his nude scene with co-star Joanna Christie was the talking point of the production.

"I sort of expected it really," he said. "If I went into it thinking nobody was going to talk about it, I would have been very stupid.

"But it's not a big part of the play, it's four minutes at most."

Some Harry Potter fans - and their parents - were dismayed at Radcliffe's decision to take on such a role.

Radcliffe said in an interview broadcast on BBC Breakfast today: "I don't want people to think I am doing it to separate myself from Harry Potter. I am doing it because it's a great play in itself."

Meanwhile Warner Bros, the studio behind the Harry Potter films, issued a statement denying reports it was unhappy with the young star's edgy new image.

The studio said it "fully support(s) him in the artistic choices he makes as an actor."

Every night Radcliffe is besieged by so many female fans at the stage door that co-stars Jenny Agutter and portly Richard Griffiths have been forced to leave through a window.

Producer David Pugh said: "You try to get Richard Griffiths out of a back window. It was touch and go."
